December 18, 2017, SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The Fundy Regional Service Commission has joined other commissions in signing a memorandum of understanding with the provincial government aimed at encouraging collaboration to help grow local and regional economies.

“Working together, we will continue to grow the New Brunswick economy,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “We are fortunate to have knowledgeable, community-minded leaders throughout New Brunswick. Your government is pleased to work with them to strengthen the Greater Saint John and Fundy Region’s economy.”

The agreements are part of an initiative led by Opportunities NB that will see similar agreements signed with each of the province’s 12 commissions. The goal is to identify ways in which communication can be improved and processes streamlined between partners in each of the regions.

Opportunities NB is a Crown corporation that seeks to attract and support opportunities to grow the economy and create jobs. It provides support services for businesses across the province.

“We have many assets in the Fundy region, including economic development organizations, post-secondary institutions and a vibrant industrial sector,” said Gary Clark, chair of the Fundy Regional Service Commission. “We are excited to work with Opportunities NB and the government to bring all parties to the table and further collaborate and strengthen our community.”

Under the agreement, Opportunities NB will place a community economic development executive in the region. The executive will meet with municipal government and local service district advisory committees, industry groups, chambers of commerce and other local and regional stakeholders on a regular basis to discuss specific economic opportunities. The executive will support local and regional opportunities through their connections to appropriate provincial and federal government departments and agencies.

Recruitment for the position has begun, with an employee expected to be in place in January.
