Oct. 16, 2023, FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued by Greg Turner, minister responsible for Opportunities NB and minister responsible for economic development and small business, in recognition of Small Business Week, Oct. 15-21:

There are approximately 26,000 small businesses operating in our province, employing more than 225,000 people, which accounts for almost 60 per cent of employment. Their combined employment power shows just how vital small businesses are to New Brunswick’s economy.

Every year in October, as part of Small Business Week, we take extra measures to recognize the efforts of small businesses in our province and promote the important work they do. As a former business owner for over 45 years, I understand the importance of consumers spending locally to help create sustainable, healthy and resilient small businesses. Government also has a role to play in assisting small businesses in their success, not only this week but year-round to continuously support them in achieving their goals for growth.

It can be difficult for entrepreneurs to navigate complex regulations that may impose a burden on their businesses. As government, our commitment lies in forging a more flexible regulatory environment for our private sector partners, one that fosters strong economic growth and prosperity throughout New Brunswick. Our whole-of-government approach to reducing regulatory burden and ensuring regulatory competitiveness is a key priority of this government.

We are passionate about breaking down barriers for businesses operating in New Brunswick, and in fiscal 2022-23, we have reduced regulatory burden by an estimated $36 million. In addition, Opportunities NB’s Business Navigators have responded to more than 1,000 inquiries from New Brunswick entrepreneurs navigating the various regulatory challenges associated with starting, owning and operating a business, which has resulted in a total of over $700,000 in regulatory burden savings.

As we continue to work toward improving the overall competitiveness of New Brunswick, and making it a place where businesses thrive, I encourage small businesses that are looking to grow to reach out to Opportunities NB’s Business Navigators (1-833-799-7966 or nav@navnb.ca).

New Brunswick business owners are some of the hardest-working and most inspiring individuals imaginable, and I applaud them for their courage, determination and hard work as we mark Small Business Week.
