Cannabis

The emerging cannabis industry is taking off in New Brunswick, thanks to world-class research and testing, training support, and a cost-competitive industrial infrastructure.

The future of cannabis

The Province of New Brunswick recognizes that the demand for medicinal cannabis offers significant economic growth opportunities, along with potential growth for the adult-use cannabis industry in the future.

Opportunities NB sees cannabis as a priority sector, and we are actively involved in enhancing the alignment between the industry’s economic and regulatory factors. Our objective is to support the success of businesses involved in the safe and competitive production, distribution, and sale of medical and adult-use cannabis and cannabis-related products.

Based on averaged industry forecasts, adult-use cannabis sales in New Brunswick could reach $150 million annually, with ancillary markets adding another $440 million, meaning the creation of approximately 600 jobs in 2018. We estimate 3,000 cannabis-related jobs could exist in New Brunswick by 2022.

A centre for research

Licensed cannabis producers in New Brunswick have access to top research and development expertise. The province’s Research and Productivity Council (RPC) currently tests the majority of medical cannabis in Canada and works with existing licensed producers on new product development.

New Brunswick is also a centre for innovative academic research. Research chairs at both St. Thomas University and the University of New Brunswick are examining the efficacy and effects of medical cannabis treatments, and the Université de Moncton is also conducting research on both hemp and cannabis. In addition, the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick (CCNB) has launched Canada’s first-ever Cannabis Cultivation Program to support the industry’s workforce needs.

Hosting the World

ONB CEO Stephen Lund co-chaired the first annual World Cannabis Congress (WCC), presented by Civilized in Saint John, New Brunswick this past June. ONB is proud to have sponsored this very successful event that brought together global cannabis industry leaders, policymakers and influencers from around the world. Keep an eye on updates about the 2019 WCC here.
