Frameworks

ESG frameworks can help to provide a structured and credible approach for ESG reporting and advancements. Most are currently known to be voluntary, however, businesses should start familiarizing themselves today to prepare for the future when certain frameworks may be mandated for participation in supply chains, export opportunities, investment opportunities, and more. Frameworks are designed to help businesses understand the kinds of questions it should be asking and prepare to take action. The ESG Change Management Checklist features common ESG framework questions that small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could consider.

Examples of Frameworks: United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), European Sustainable Reporting Standards (ESRS), etc.

Certifications

ESG certifications are often processes designed to help businesses approach ESG frameworks and report on actions and targets in a credible manner. They are often impact assessment tools, environmental databases, and internationally recognized third-party verifications. A business can be certified for its social impact, building and energy efficiency, product validations, forest management, greenhouse gas emissions, and more.

Examples of Certifications: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®), B-Corp Impact Assessment Tool & Certification, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), The Carbon Trust, Leaping Bunny, etc.

Programs

ESG programs are designed to aid sustainable developments within a business. They range from rebates to funds, and many programs support the green transition and clean technology developments.

An impactful way that businesses can contribute to keeping global warming to 1.5°C is by cutting energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. Among federal programs are many programs locally offered by SaveEnergyNB that incentivize the green transition and support efficiency upgrades for businesses.

There are also funds available to accelerate the development of clean technology.

Examples of Clean Tech Funds: Clean Tech Practice, Industrial, Clean and Energy Technology (ICE) Venture Fund, Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) Seed Fund, etc.
