Regional Service Commissions

Regional Service Commissions (RSCs) came into function on January 1, 2013. They were initially mandated to offer solid waste and planning services. As of January 1, 2023, the RSCs have seen the addition of new services: economic development (including workforce development), tourism promotion, community development, regional transportation (community transit), and regional infrastructure cost-sharing. The RSCs have shown over the years that residents benefit from a greater level of regional collaboration. Local governance reform recognizes that the best approach to achieving progress across the province is to give RSCs a broader mandate – one that requires elected officials and leaders to develop a regional vision and a consistent approach to addressing opportunities and challenges.
