canada’s defence boom means opportunities for new brunswick

3 minutes read time.

From the buzz of the exhibition floor to conversations with global industry leaders, CANSEC 2026 offered a look at the developments shaping the future of defence and security. ONB was there to connect with companies exploring growth in Canada, showcase New Brunswick’s many strengths, and gather insights that will help businesses identify where they can fit in the sector.

The conversations at CANSEC highlighted several opportunities for New Brunswick; below are our team’s key takeaways.

Defence Investment Is Accelerating

One message was clear at CANSEC: defence and security are now firmly established as national priorities. Government and industry leaders emphasized that this momentum is translating into real procurement activity and long-term business opportunities. For New Brunswick firms, this creates an environment where organizations of all sizes can explore how they can contribute products, services, and expertise to the defence ecosystem. Crucially, several large prime contractors expressed interest in learning more about New Brunswick companies that could support their supply chains, reflecting the growing demand for capable Canadian suppliers. Businesses that begin building connections and understanding procurement requirements now will be better positioned to capitalize moving forward.

New Brunswick’s Strengths Align with Priorities

New Brunswick’s advantages – industrial marine infrastructure, land systems, cybersecurity – were well represented throughout the conference, with several New Brunswick-based companies and ONB partners participating.

The capabilities found in New Brunswick align with several of the areas currently receiving significant attention. Cybersecurity, for example, continues to be a major priority as organizations work to strengthen critical infrastructure and protect sensitive data. During the event, the province’s cybersecurity expertise took the spotlight when Fredericton-based Lastwall announced the close of a $16M financing round led by BDC, with support from the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF). The investment positions the company at the forefront of Canada’s efforts to strengthen sovereign cyber defence capabilities and highlights the growing recognition of New Brunswick’s strengths in this critical sector.

In addition, several companies highlighted the strategic value of being located near CFB Gagetown, recognizing the value associated with proximity to one of Canada’s largest military bases and training centres. These strengths provide a strong foundation for businesses looking to diversify into the defence sector or expand their existing involvement in the industry.

New Brunswick’s Profile Is Rising

Atlantic Canada, and New Brunswick in particular, received plenty of attention from both prime contractors and government stakeholders. Many of the conversations we had during the conference reflected a stronger awareness of the strengths that New Brunswick companies bring to national defence. There is increasing recognition of our skilled workforce, competitive operating environment, innovation ecosystem, and strategic location. The Government of New Brunswick’s Economic Development Strategy has identified defence and dual-use capabilities as one of the province’s three priority areas for growth. ONB is excited by this focus, as it builds on the province’s strategic military presence and world-class cybersecurity cluster. By leveraging these advantages, New Brunswick is well positioned to strengthen its position in Canada’s defence and security landscape.

Relationships Are Key

Success will depend on becoming part of established supply chains led by major prime contractors. For many small and medium-sized businesses, opportunities may come through partnerships, subcontracting, or collaborative projects rather than direct procurement contracts. Like most sectors, defence leaders stress the value of networking, maintaining a presence at sector events, and investing time in long-term relationship building. Companies that can demonstrate reliability, expertise, and a willingness to collaborate are best positioned.
