Last year, two world-class New Brunswick companies brought home the highest honours at the 2025 NB Export Awards gala, earning recognition for their overall excellence in export development.
We continue our look at past Export Award winners by spotlighting the Exporter of the Year (over $5 million in export sales), Organigram Global, and Exporter of the Year (under $5 million in export sales), Anessa.
ONB is excited to see who follows in these two great companies’ footsteps on May 28 in Saint John.
Organigram Global
Organigram Global is Canada’s number one cannabis company by market share, with more than 1,200 employees nationwide and over 700 at its flagship Moncton facility. The company produces more than 100,000 kilograms of cannabis annually, exporting products across Canada and to international markets including Germany, Australia, and the U.K.
“We’re proud of the work being done here in New Brunswick, where we’ve built Canada’s number one cannabis company and produce products that are shipped to markets around the world,” said Matt Carreau, Senior VP of Operations East. That work earned Organigram Global its Export Award win last year, an honour Carreau says meant a great deal to the company.
“We applied because we wanted to raise awareness of who we are and the role we play in New Brunswick,” he said. “Since cannabis legalization, our industry has not always been front and centre, and this gave us an opportunity to step forward. It was a proud moment for us to be recognized alongside so many successful businesses, and to see our industry acknowledged as a legitimate and meaningful contributor to New Brunswick’s economy. We wanted to shine a light on that contribution.”
He credits support from ONB with helping the company expand its reach through networking, partnerships, and innovation support. Operating in Moncton has also helped the company grow. The city’s skilled talent pool and standing as a transportation and logistics hub make it easier to staff a large operation and move products efficiently to market.
He says the award win ultimately belongs to the team behind the company’s growth. “Winning was a testament to the hard work the team in Moncton and across the country, whose efforts helped make the company the success it is,” he said. “We are proud to be a New Brunswick success story.”
Anessa
Fredericton’s Anessa is helping accelerate the global transition to renewable energy. The company develops digital twin technology for biogas plants, combining artificial intelligence with advanced modelling to help operators plan, optimize, and monitor renewable energy systems.
Co-founder and CTO Dr. Farough Motasemi says the company’s mission is both technological and environmental. “At Anessa, we’re helping the global transition to renewable energy by providing more sustainable ways of generating clean energy and making the world a greener place.”
Anessa’s international growth, notably in France, led it to apply for the Export Awards. The 2025 win followed its Innovative Exporter win the year prior. “Being twice recognized in our backyard shows our team that all their hard work creating great technology here and exporting it globally has not gone unnoticed,” Motasemi said. “It’s great validation for the days and nights we’ve all spent working on the product.”
Motasemi says ONB helped the company grow internationally through market intelligence and travel to international trade missions. The firm has also benefited greatly from Fredericton’s supportive innovation ecosystem, including access to talent from the University of New Brunswick, where he and CEO Amir Akbari met while pursuing graduate degrees.
Anessa has already made new strides this year in France and hopes to establish a foothold in Germany, where a large biogas industry presents exciting opportunities for the firm in 2026.
