From one small clinic to a national organization of approximately 1,500 team members coast to coast, Moncton’s BioScript Solutions has become one of Canada’s top healthcare providers.
The company was founded in 2001 and stems from a research study on Remicade, a drug used to treat autoimmune diseases. To assist with that study, Moncton pharmacist David Ford established an infusion clinic at his Coverdale Road pharmacy. His efforts were so well received that he was asked to open more clinics throughout the region – the rest is history.
Today, BioScript supports patients with a host of chronic illnesses and rare diseases, providing access to complex drug therapies and delivering full-service specialty solutions throughout their treatment journey. It now has pharmacies in every province, over 100 clinics nationwide, and provides many patient support programs.
New Brunswick growth
Kelly Thompson, Vice President of People & Engagement, says that in the four years since she joined BioScript, the company has dramatically grown its team in New Brunswick and beyond. “In 2020, we had just under 800 team members, since then we’ve nearly doubled our team, and much of that growth has been in New Brunswick,” she says. “Our patient support program is where our relationship with Opportunities NB began. We first launched it in Ontario, and as we looked to bring it to New Brunswick, ONB’s financial assistance helped us expand our patient support team (NavieGo). From four team members when we partnered with ONB in 2018, to 36 team members supporting NavieGo by 2022 in this province, we now have 94. That increase is representative of the tremendous growth across the organization over the past few years.”
One of Canada’s Best Managed Companies
This spring saw BioScript recognized by Deloitte as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies for the fourth consecutive year, granting it Gold Standard recognition (achieved by successfully retaining its status for four years).
Thompson says BioScript places great importance on that recognition and believes the company’s culture is what attracts great people. “Our co-founders David Ford and Andrew Steeves continue to be heavily involved with the organization; we actually refer to them as our culture ambassadors,” she says. “They ensure we manage to keep everyone at all levels engaged in the important work we do; a highly engaged team delivers great experiences for patients. We would not be able to attract and retain the talent we do without a well-defined organizational culture.”
Proud of its roots
BioScript’s culture includes a strong focus on community. “We have grown to become a national organization, but being founded in New Brunswick and continuing to grow here is a huge point of pride for our organization. We’re a New Brunswick success first and foremost,” says Thompson. “So, it’s essential for us to be active community members and stay invested in this region’s success. We have supported the Moncton Santa Claus Parade, the NB Ride to Conquer Cancer, the Moncton New Year’s Eve Family Fun Fest, the River of Pride Parade, and the Terry Fox Run. We also contribute to the MS Society’s Acts of Greatness Campaign, sponsor Crohn’s and Colitis Canada’s Gutsy Walk, and are partners with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion.”
Another key initiative is the Indigenous Pharmacy Scholarship, which supports Indigenous pharmacy professionals, and helps pharmacists provide better care to Indigenous patients. “We’re proud to be one of the first five organizations in Canada to fund this initiative, which ensures better access to pharmacy schooling for Indigenous youth across Canada,” notes Thompson. “It helps ensure the industry has a robust future talent pool and aligns well with our culture and commitment to diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equity. Simply put, it’s the right thing to do.”
